Facet: Aligning with Essence
The capacity to recognize what is essential underneath the personas, and to act, commit, and communicate from there.
The first four Facets clear the way for your true essential nature to emerge. Build in practices that allow cultivation of your Essence over time. — Manual v3, p. 108
How it shows up in practice
Essence is what is true under the layers of survival adaptation. Aligning with it is the move from defended self-presentation toward congruent self-expression — purpose felt and named, intentions taken seriously, commitments kept, communication that comes from openness rather than defense.
The “I…” competencies
The canonical Colwell Practice list of what someone who has developed this facet can do (Manual v3, p. 108):
- I know my purpose.
- My manifesto/commitments/intentions are clear and available to me at all times; my life and myself reflect these.
- My essence is palpable.
- I am in energetic balance.
- I love myself deeply and continuously.
- I relate to myself compassionately.
- I know what I really want and I live intentionally from what I really want.
- I understand flow, how to co-create it, and how to surf it.
- I connect with others from Creative Brain, always looking for the answer to “How can everybody get everything they want?”
Where this lives visually
The inner-map diagram depicts this facet’s territory directly. The upper register of the map — above the Bridge — is labeled ESSENCE and contains the states this facet develops the capacity to inhabit: Neutrality, Acceptance, Appreciation, Love, Joy, Peace. The right-axis label for this whole upper section is Evolutionary Power.
Aligning with essence, in the diagram’s terms, is the move across the Bridge — “willingness to shift and see self as creator” — and then the ongoing practice of remaining in the upper register when life makes that available.

- principle-9 — Spiritual, Not Religious. The “essence” this facet points at is the EPI non-denominational frame for what is larger than the isolated self. The Inner Map’s ESSENCE label is consistent with this framing.
