This page is the standing reference for how content from The Colwell Practice (Julie Colwell’s professional modality) is translated into EPI (the peer-led modality). It is maintained as load-bearing: every tool page ingested from Julie’s material should reflect the translation decisions named here.

What this page is — and is not

This is not a fork. A fork holds genuine institutional or philosophical tension that has not been resolved. The relationship between The Colwell Practice and EPI is not in tension: same body of work, same lineage, same teacher (Julie). Julie is on the EPI team. The work is hers, and freely available for the peer-led modality, as long as crediting is consistent.

This is a translation reference. Two distinct delivery modalities of the same body of work, with predictable language moves between them.

Lineage discipline — standing attribution pattern

When a tool is ingested from any Julie-authored Colwell source, the tool page must carry:

1. The Source line in frontmatter (source: raw/...).
2. The Attribution line in frontmatter (attribution: Julia Colwell, PhD. Lineage: Gay & Kathlyn Hendricks.) — with any additional lineage Julie has cited (e.g., David Hawkins for the Inner Map, Stephen Karpman for the Triangle, Monte Atkinson for Egg Theory).
3. A Source and attribution section in the page body listing:
   • The primary source document and page numbers.
   • Any visual handout file paths.
   • The lineage Julie credits.

When a visual handout footer credits Cynthia Hildner or another collaborator, that credit is preserved on the wiki page.

The content is identical. The wrapper is different by design.

Translation moves — language

When exporting content from a Colwell source into the wiki, translate inline (Option X). Mostly cosmetic, but some moves are substantive.

Cosmetic (translate inline without flagging)

• “As facilitator…” → “When you’re sitting with someone in this process…” / “When holding space for a peer…”
• “The coach…” → “The peer holding space…” / “The practitioner guiding…”
• “Your client…” → “The speaker…” / “The other person…” / “The practitioner you’re with…”
• “Demo / demonstrate” (in teaching contexts) → omit; the peer-led modality doesn’t structure around demonstration.
• “Training” (as a verb for skill acquisition) → “practice” or “practicing” — training implies a trainer.

Substantive (translate AND flag inline)

Some material in the manual is specifically about the professional modality and doesn’t translate cleanly. When ingesting these, flag the choice on the page:

• Code of Ethics, fees, scope of practice, conflict of interest, complaint handling (Manual v3 pp. 10-12): primarily applicable to TCP. EPI’s equivalents are the safe-harbor-statement, group conscience (principle-10), and refer out via egg-theory + principle-19. The Code itself is not ingested as canonical EPI content.

• “Coach/Client Agreement” (Manual v3 p. 10): does not translate. EPI’s analog is the implicit container created by the meeting form (meeting-script) and, in the dyadic case, the explicit agreement between Guide and Traveler (guide-traveler-companion when drafted).

• “CPI Director”: does not translate. EPI complaints flow through group conscience, not a designated director (see principle-10 — no central authority).

• “Healing” / “therapy” / “treatment” language: the manual uses these freely. EPI does not. principle-19 explicitly states group is not therapy. Translate to practice, the work, meeting yourself, etc. — and flag if a Manual passage is being lifted that depends on healing/therapy framing for its meaning.

What this means for ingest decisions

When ingesting a Julie-authored source, ask three questions:

1. Is this content (the body of work) or wrapper (the modality delivery)? Content lifts; wrapper translates.

2. If wrapper, is the translation cosmetic or substantive? Cosmetic: translate inline silently. Substantive: translate AND flag on the page so the team can review.

3. What lineage does Julie credit? Carry that forward. Hendricks, Hawkins, Karpman, Atkinson, Hildner — each is named verbatim where Julie names them.

Open items / team-review

A few translation calls were made in good faith but warrant team confirmation:

• “Above the Line” vs. “Creative Brain” as the canonical EPI phrasing. The manual uses both; the epi-foundational-commitments use “Above the Line”; the inner-map uses “Creative Brain”. Both are consistent with the source. Team may want to pick a primary phrasing for wiki-wide use.

• “Co-creative” vs. “co-creative” vs. “cocreative”: the source uses all three spellings. The wiki currently uses “co-creative” consistently. No team confirmation needed unless the team wants different.

• “Witness” / “hold space” for the peer-holding role: the wiki uses “hold space” and “sit with” most often. “Witness” is a legitimate alternative not yet used in the wiki. Team may want to settle a preferred verb.

• Where to direct people who need more than the practice supports. egg-theory names the Overwhelmed / Rigid / Psychotic registers where EPI tools are not enough. The wiki does not currently maintain a referral list of professional resources (and probably shouldn’t, given principle-23 — no opinion on outside issues). But the practical “if you or someone you’re holding space for needs more than this…” language deserves team discernment.

Where this discipline lives in the wiki

Every tool page ingested from Julie’s materials carries this discipline. The Inner Map (inner-map — Source and attribution) is the model; the Wave A ingest from the Colwell Practice Immersion Manual v3 applied the same pattern to ~13 pages on 2026-05-25.

This page is the load-bearing reference any future ingest should check against.

Status notes

Replaces what was previously held as an open question on wiki/overview.md (“The Colwell Practice ↔ EPI relationship”). The team resolved this as a translation question, not an institutional one. The Inner Map ingest’s earlier ⚠️ team- clarification block has been removed from inner-map in light of this resolution.
